I know! I know!… I´m supposed to write about decorating but once in a while I just have to post some inspiring fashion pics too. I just got the latest Goop Newsletter and couldn´t help but share with the rest of you. For those of you who haven´t seen Gwyneth Paltrow´s blog,GOOP… please check it out for Miss P´s tips on everything from fashion, art, food and just being a working “mum” (hmm… a very fabulous working mom I might add). Here´s some fall fashion tips from Gwyneth. I found a couple of the pictures from her blog and couldn´t tell the date.. but whether it´s from this year, last or even longer… it seems just as relevant and chic. (the one with her cute gray sweater dress is obviously older just by looking at her hairstyle.. but cute nonetheless).

I am taking a break and am down in the south of France for some relaxing vacation. I´ll try to blog as much as possible but if there´s some long delays in between.. I´m probably at the beach and will check back soon!

On Saturday I am leaving for New York to spend time with some old friends and get some inspiration for my shop. I can´t wait.

It´s a classic! ... and in my opinion most fun when done in unexpected color combinations or used in unexpected ways like the back of the black barrel chairs in the chic black/grey living rom. I´m not a big lover of the very traditional french toiles with muted colors and sweet motives. I like it strong, bold and a bit young lookin´.

I've had this image in my files for the longest time. First I tore it out of a magazine because I went crazy for the carpet design... now I started looking at it again because of the yellow accents. I love this room! It´s a great balance of color, bold pattern on the wall and great artwork.... not to mention the sheep sculpture. Looks like a Lalanne piece..hmm I wonder...

This amazing photograph by Massimo Vitali, (1944 Italian) of the Butterfly Valley/Turkey, is an edition of 6 and is selling for a humble 25,000 Euro. A great size at 5 x 6 ft. this would be a stunner in your dining room or above your sofa. Now this is what I would love on my wall... imagine gazing at this and almost feeling the refreshing blue water and sunshine on your face. Furniture arrangement with Carl Malmsten sofa

I had a consultation meeting with a client this weekend and helped them with the furniture arrangement in their very large living room as well as suggest furniture and lighting to work with the plan.

To bring focus to the rooms beautiful fireplace I suggested centering the furniture plan in the middle of the room and create several different seating areas for the family and their many friends who often come for visits.

The seating plan called for two sofas; one large 3-seater that I want to upholster in a gorgeous rusty orange linen, and perpendicular to that, a smaller lighter piece opposite the fireplace in a more neutral fabric. All pulled together with a large area rug, a big square coffee table and two vintage leather armchairs.

To avoid two sofas taking too much of the visual space, I suggested a lighter shape with wooden legs coming off the floor a bit to open up the space. I thought of a sofa by Carl Malmsten which is called "Samspel" and looks kind of like a camelback sofa. Malmsten was Sweden´s most famous furniture designer and created pieces in the 50´s and 60´s that are as beautiful and relevant today. Malmsten was born in 1888 and lived until 1972. The shapes are light and flowing, elegant yet understated. There are a few companies manufacturing new pieces today but you can also find models at auction which is great when you want to add your own flair with a handpicked fabric.

I´m going to scour the different auctions and see what I can find...

I am working on a "Design Online" project in New York for a young family on the Upper West Side. It´s so great working on something in New York again with all the possibilities and endless resources. I am making a custom carpet at the moment and the sampling process starts monday. I can´t wait to get the strike-off to see the pattern and the color.. and most of all the texture. We´re making a chevron pattern on a cotton Dhurrie and I think it´s going to be great.

Here´s a picture of the pattern, however not the color. We are basing the color on Lulu DK´s Tulah print which is going to be on the headboard.

I just finished my first Design Online Project and I am so happy how it all turned out. It worked really well doing everything from a distance and communicating with the client via phone and email was perfect in getting all thoughts across and showing moodboards and shopping lists.

Project Francis

Stockholm recently (well back in February) hosted a big furniture fair which I happily attended with one of my dearest friends and fellow blogger from "annagillar". Unfortunately we ended up going around in a small circle, missing half of what was there, but we had a great time catching up on life and work in the meantime.

I normally think the Swedish trade shows are a bit too modern in feeling for me since my taste is a bit more contemporary with classic influences, but what made the strongest impression on me were these fantastic light installations made by a design duo called Dmoch. Colorful and creative these lights can be installed on the wall, on the floor or in the ceiling... cool, right?

Two recent grads from "Malmstensskolan" are the creators behind this collection they so interestingly call Project Francis, after Francis Ford Coppola. Um, ok?!

I think they´re great and have just suggested one for a current project I´m working on. I´m all about mixing styles so I could see these just about anywhere.

Village Townhouse

One of many great memories from my time in New York was seeing first hand the gorgeously decorated townhouse belonging to beautiful Allison Serafim. On one of the West Village´s prettiest streets lies this 4 story amazing home (lucky girl!!) decorated by Serafim´s friend and decorator Miles Redd. Each room is sophisticated, chic, inviting and full of interesting art and furniture. I fell in love with it and just kept thinking Allison is one of the luckiest women in the world. One of my favorite pieces in the house is an oversize lucite coffee table which I am dying to recreate for one of my clients one day.

I wonder if she still lives there...

I tend to love really masculine interiors... they´re bold, sharp and so handsome. I like the clean lines, the dark upholstery and true flair these pictures exhibit.

The gold books in the last picture is a nice touch... but I would get rid of the real zebra on the floor. Poor baby... I could never step on his beautiful face every morning.

My latest TV appearance - tips on hanging art

Here´s my top 10 tips :

1. Hang art that is in harmony with the rest of your furniture. You want to use the art to enhance your room and what it hangs above.

2. Hang art in pairs or groupings. Art usually has more impact when it´s hung in a pair or a group unless the piece is so large that it can carry the whole wall.

3. If you´re unsure about the space in between each piece of art... double the width of your frame. For instance, if your frames are 2 cm wide, make the space in between each picture 4 cm.

4. In general, most pieces should hang in eye-level. If you had to pull up a chair to reach, you´ve aimed too high.

5. Think about each piece in the group. They should relate either by subject or color.

6. Don´t forget about proportions. The arrangement should occupy about 2/3 of the wall above the furniture. Be careful not to hang outside the width of the piece of furniture below.

7. Don´t be afraid to hang art low. Place a small piece of art approximately 30 - 35 cm. above the table. Don´t worry if the lamp on the table covers part of the frame. It´s all about layering.

8. Use a group of pictures to expand your space. Hang stacks of art on either side of a narrow piece of furniture to make the space seem wider.

9. Hang items other than traditional art. Display collections of things you like. If you love hats, display them in a group on the wall.

10. Most importantly.. hang pieces you love. Don´t focus on trends.. you´ll tire of it too quickly. Go with things you love and want to surround yourself with.

bonus tip : before you put the nails in the wall... start by tracing each picture onto brown kraft paper and tape each piece up to the wall and play around with the arrangement until you are happy. Once you like the look of the grouping, you can hang them up. Easy as pie!

Try these roquefort grapes at your next gathering...

Roquefort Grapes

Serves 25

1/2 lb Roquefort cheese
1/2 lb cream cheese (not gum-based)
1/4 lb pistachios
1 bunch (about 1 lb) seedless green grapes, chilled

Thoroughly blend the cheeses, then cover and refrigerate for 2 hours. In a food processor, chop the nuts finely. Remove the grape stems. Coat each grape by flattening a small amount of the cheese mixture in your palm then rolling the grape and cheese between both palms; transfer to a waxed-paper-lined pan. Perfect versatile desk - the Parsons table

The ever versatile and uber chic "Parsons" table has been a popular piece for many decorators. You can place it in classic interiors as easily as in more modern environments and you can pair it with just about any style of chair you can find.

According to the New York Times, the Parsons table got its name from French decorator Jean-Michel Frank, who assigned his students at Parsons in Paris to design a table that could be made equally well in any material, whether it be stone, plexiglas or wood. It´s main characteristics is that its legs are always the same thickness as its top.

Many furniture makers have made variations of this table which come in many sizes and finishes.

Here´s some interiors that have used the simple parsons desk from West Elm. I think my latest bedroom project could be a great place for this..

I am the happiest when I get to create and work on projects and I have the joy of working on a few at the moment. I just got a new client who wants help with her Master Bedroom in New York with fabulous views overlooking the Hudson River. I can´t wait to get started on that. I was searching around the web for some inspiration and found these great pictures from Kelly Wearstlers blog. Instead of the usual mood board, she creates "vibe trays" where she gathers colors, materials and objects that combine the feel of every room she designs. I love that idea!

The New York bedroom will be much more muted than this but I think Kelly´s process is very inspiring.

I never want to part with my old Elle Decor and House Beautiful magazines because I constantly go back and look through them for more inspiration. Maybe if I had a collection of National Geographic. Steal or splurge!! the candle question ..

Buying a scented candle these days is almost as expensive as buying a luxury perfume. So why should you go for the more expensive version when you can get a cheap one for half the price? The answer is simple!!!

It´s really all about the ingredients!

First of all it´s important to understand the difference between a paraffin based candle and a soy or vegetable wax candle.

Paraffin is the most commonly used wax to create candles, however, that doesn´t mean that it´s the better choice. It´s just the cheaper one. If you buy a candle that is not labeled soy, vegetable or beeswax, chances are that you have purchased a candle that is made from paraffin waxes.

Paraffin wax is a heavy hydrocarbon that comes from separating the waxes out of crude oil (fossil fuel). The crude oil comes from the ground and is transported to refineries where it´s refined into a finished product through a variety of complex processes. One of many products that comes from refining crude oil is lubricating oil, which in turn produces petrolium waxes. There are three categories of petroleum wax that are obtained which include paraffin, microcrystalline and petrolatum.

So to sum it all up, paraffin is a bi-product of petroleum oil!

Soy on the other hand is a completely natural product made from the oil of soybeans.

The beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled and rolled into little flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. This process alters the melting point of the oil making it a solid at room temperature. So a burning soy candle is not as hot as a burning paraffin candle, making it less of a hazard to you if you should spill the running wax.

The U.S grows the majority of the worlds soybeans so chances are when you buy a soy candle you are supporting America´s midwestern farmers, which in my opinion is a reason alone for choosing soy.

Now you may ask yourself.. what are some of the other advantages of buying a soy candle besides being natural?

Although they still give off some soot, they produce way less than the paraffin based candles. It´s important to look for a candle that has a 100% cotton wick and remember to trim it short before each burn which will keep the soot to a minimum. Some manufacturers will claim that soy candles produce no soot at all, but all organic compounds will emit some soot when burned. It´s basically the same as the soot given off by your kitchen appliances such as your toaster and cooking oils. The paraffin candles on the other hand can give off so much soot that it can leave black stains on your wall or ceiling and many say the toxins that come from burning these can be harmful. So for health, environmental reasons and If you don´t want to repaint your room after every candle I suggest you opt for the soy based kind.

Another benefit to soy is that it´s a renewable resource and is limited only by how many beans are grown. It also lasts twice as long so even if you spend more money, you get much longer burn time and get a beautiful spread of the fragrance through your home.

Last but definetly not least, the fragrance of your candle is very important... that´s the reason to buy them in the first place, right?! Look for candles that have all natural ingredients and only use fine fragrance oils and you´ll have a beautifully scented home. There´s nothing worse than a cheap perfume..and this is no different. They may cost a pretty penny, but the quality and content of your candle is really important. A nice scent is the final touch to any decorated home and will set yours apart from all the others. Once you´ve found a fragrance you love, you won´t want to live without it.

New Years resolution : Have to be better at writing more frequent posts!

I´m sorry there hasn´t been much new to read on here for a while. I´ve been away for the holidays and now I am in New York looking all over town for new and exciting things to buy for the shop. I had a great meeting with a wonderful rug designer and am so thrilled to start working with him. He does gorgeous handtufted and flatwoven rugs in all kinds of cool patterns with the most beautiful textures and quality. As soon as I am back in Stockholm I am placing an order for a couple of samples for the shop. You are going to LOVE them!!

Here are a few pictures from my trip around town for some inspiration. I have some favorite shops that I keep going back to and these pics are from their lovely interiors. I´ll write more about the shops at another point.

But for now, enjoy some inspiration from New York !

Last day before Christmas and I´m wrapping presents and taking care of the last minute things before I head for my big trip tomorrow. If you haven´t baked all your cookies and made all the christmas candy yet.. here´s one of my favorite recipes (and some pics of other yummi treats as well... recipes can be found at www.marthastewart.com )

Chocolate-coconut bars. Yum!

Super easy and oh so delicious!

Makes 20

3 cups finely ground cookies (12 ounces), such as graham crackers or chocolate wafers, or a combination
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
1 cup pecan pieces
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips or chunks
1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly splash a 15-by-10-inch rimmed baking sheet evenly with water, then line with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, stir together cookie crumbs, sugar, and butter until combined. Evenly press onto bottom and up sides of prepared baking sheet. Bake, rotating halfway through, until firm, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack; cool, about 20 minutes.
Sprinkle cooled crust evenly with pecans and chocolate. Pour condensed milk over the top, spreading to cover completely (do not let it drip over the edges). Sprinkle with coconut.
Bake until coconut is toasted, 10 to 15 minutes. Transfer to rack; cool completely. Trim edges, if desired, and cut into equal-size bars.

There are so many wonderful things about Christmas, and up on top of the list is all the yummy candy you get to eat. My boyfriend and I are making our own this sunday with the family.

We all help out and make one or two treats each so at the end of the day our fridge is stacked with chocolate fudge, rocky-road bars, mini chocolate covered coconut treats among many others.

I just got these beautiful glass domes delivered today. I love this kind of thing... just not sure what I´m going to put inside. At the moment I placed a potted hyacinth in the large one which looks really pretty. I think I may have to get some pretty shells and fill the smaller one... or some cookies. Yum!

Super charming illustrations by Louise Winblad, a local artist here in Stockholm. They´re on display in the shop until end of January. She has managed to draw such incredible expressions on the people in the pictures and captures such humor in every illustration. I love them and just looking at them puts a smile on my face.

They say bigger is better... but in this case smaller works better for me. I have moved my shop to a much smaller space and I am so excited. It was a quick move and over a span of 3 days we had painted, moved millions of boxes and re-decorated the new space. Needless to say... I am happy it´s Friday and I can relax for a bit.

Lately I have been obsessed with yellow. It just brightens everything up and is such a happy color.

In my new shop (move in date to be announced soon...) I am going to have gray walls and long gorgeous yellow velvet curtains, topped off with some black accent furniture and gorgeous accessories.

How to : pick a paint color

Picking the right paint color can be super tricky. Whether you are picking colors for a room in your apartment, the shutters around the windows on your house... or in my case at the moment... a background color for my new website, finding that perfect color is not so easy.

I always turn to Farrow & Ball who makes such beautiful colors and was happy to find these handy color or "mood" boards which were a great help.

Come back to these the next time you need to repaint and your color picking process will be much more enjoyable.

For more inspiration... pick up their latest book, Living with Color by Ros Byam Shaw, Ryland Peters & Small which is packed with interiors showing their color collection. Best of all, every room gives references to each Farrow & Ball paint !

Helpful tip : Always buy a small sample pot and test the paint on your wall before purchasing several gallons. Live with it for a couple of days before painting the whole room as the different lights during the day will alter the color. If you love the color as much in the daytime as the evening you are good to go.

"Fall.. makes me want to buy school supplies" ... said Tom Hanks in one of my all time favorite movies, You´ve got Mail!

Fall... makes me want to run to J.Crew and buy stacks of crisp button down shirts, warm and cozy cashmere sweaters (in all imaginable colors) and a pair of slightly worn, nicely fit blue jeans. Throw on a classic pea coat and boots and you´re good to go. (makes me sound very 90´s but I bet they have a version of the classic pea coat left in their collection). I love J. Crew and besides their phenomenal sense of style in clothes (thanks Jenna Lyons) they have really done well with the whole brand in terms of all around design presentation and concept.

J. Crew has expanded their store locations in Manhattan and opened up several specialty Men´s Stores across town as well as a beautiful Bridal Boutique on the Upper East Side.

Most recently, a new mens shop on Madison Avenue opened up where the fashion giant took over an old two story bank. Apparently inspired by the Alps they created a Chalet like atmosphere with wood panels and cozy interiors, comfortable for anyone to stay a while and shop.

So all you New Yorkers out there... hurry over and have a look!

As a tribute to him I wanted to share with you some photos from his gorgeous apartment on 57th street in Manhattan. His apartment is a true reflection of his personal style, passion for design and love for contemporary art and photography. Brian is such a true gentleman and was an amazing mentor for me. I am feeling desperately homesick lately. I haven´t been in New York since March and it feels like it´s time to go back again. Unfortunately due to work (and lack of money) I can´t jump on a plane quite yet. But oh how I wish I could...

My saturdays in NY were so great... I'd wake up and take my dog for a nice long walk through the tree-lined streets of Brooklyn Heights, down through Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens... stop for an Iced caramel Machiato at Starbucks on my way home and sit on one of the park benches on the promenade and look out over the skyline.

Then Spinning class at my gym around the corner for an hour and after that I´d clean my apartment while watching cooking shows with Barefoot Contessa and Giada diLaurentis. It was so relaxing even though I was dusting and vacuuming all over the place. Later on I´d take the train to West 4th street and walk around the West Village and meet up with friends for window shopping and mani/pedis. Saturday nights were usually date night and spent at some cozy NY restaurant with amazing atmosphere and delicious food.

Just thinking about it makes me want to be there in a heartbeat... if only I could click the heels of my shoes and magically get myself over there. Just like Dorothy in "Somewhere over the Rainbow"

My friend Carlos told me the other day that he laid next to Sarah Jessica Parker & Family on the beach in the Hamptons a few weeks ago. (ok I´m not at all jealous of this celebrity spotting) Carlos gets tan like a gingerbread cookie (and is quite handsome) so naturally he liked to tell me she was checking him out. Wishful thinking my friend! I´m sure she was busy checking on her kiddos running in and out of the water. He did say though that she looked smokin´.. which of course is no surprise at all.
